Summary: Facial pain is common, has a wide differential, and multiple treatment modalities. The presentation will review the accurate diagnosis and management of facial pain, with particular focus on trigeminal neuralgia. Key elements in history, neuroimaging, and subsequent choice of treatment will be reviewed, including current advances in individualized medical and/or surgical intervention.
(1) Distinguish idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia from other types of facial pain
(2) Choose what is the best medical/surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia for each individual patient
(3) New therapies in clinical development for the treatment of trigeminal development.
(4) Novel imaging analysis and psychophysical testing for dental pain of neurological origin.
