Airway evaluation and treatment is a hot topic in dentistry. Dental devices have become mainstream for the treatment of mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). In more recent years, we have found that dental devices to temporarily advance the mandible are just scratching the surface of therapy of the airway-compromised patient. The use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to evaluate airway obstructions is an objective indicator to the level of potential sleep apnea. CBCT diagnostics can also guide clinicians to proper treatment of a compromised airway. A non-obstructed airway with nasal breathing is critical for proper physiological sleep and affects both children and adults. Poor physiological sleep in both age groups have very different consequences to their long-term health, including Temporomandibular  Disorders (TMD), dental crowding, bruxism/clenching, enamel wear/erosion, bone loss, gingival recession, craniofacial distortions, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), cardiovascular disease, diabetes, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and many other medical sequelae.

At conclusion, participants should be able to:

1.     Understand the concept of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) versus Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

2.     Assess patients for relevant airway-related signs and symptoms

3.     Assess a variety of objective CBCT measurements and interpret the findings

4.     More predictably treat patients with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), severe wear, erosion and recession

5.     Collaborate with other dental and medical professionals in a very meaningful capacity for the patient’s well-being

6.     Provide a foundation from which to further our education toward more specialized airway-focused dentistry
